What Expenses Could Be Hidden Under That Dream Home?
New-Construction homes may look perfect, but what about the vital part that lies beneath the ground – sewer lines? Sewer lines (laterals) are out of sight – and often out of mind – for most home buyers. It is important to remember that sewer lateral inspections are a critical component in the home buying process.
Ask Joe
“If I’m buying a home under new construction, why do I need a camera inspection?”
Thanks for your question. Because things happen during construction. Unfortunately, people often think that if a property is less than 20 years old, it is not necessary to inspect the sewer lateral. Sewers may not be connected to the main line, or connections are not completed. My daughter’s new house had a sewer lateral that was filled with gravel. Sometimes during construction, when heavy equipment is on the property or ground is being shifted, sewer laterals can get shifted, broken or crushed. For minimal costs, a camera inspection can give a buyer peace of mind.

Flooding caused by sewer backups can cause damage to the walls, floor, and irreplaceable personal belongings. Repairing the damage can end up costing the home owner many thousands of dollars and create health hazards.
